How much does wifi for an ipod touch cost?

ok im confused because i've heard some people saying that wifi is a monthly cost thats like $30 a month to have it in your home, and some people saying that it's free if you have a router. Also, I have a laptop in my house...and it has wireless internet connection, so is that considered wifi? Do i already have it? Somebody help meee lol
